Fred Clayton was born in 1958 in Birmingham, Alabama. At the age of 11, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he began studying music at the renowned Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts. His early musical foundation continued to grow after moving to Western Massachusetts, where he was influenced and inspired by legendary musicians including Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Steve McCraven, and Avery Sharpe.
Over the years, Clayton has developed a rich musical style shaped by jazz, soul, and rhythm-driven traditions, bringing decades of experience and artistry to every performance. His live shows reflect a deep love of music, blending skillful musicianship with a warm, engaging presence that audiences instantly connect with.
